College isn't cheap these days, and for students who need a financial boost, the Arlington Community Foundation is on hand to help.

The foundation recently awarded 142 scholarships (ranging between $1,000 and $5,000) from 37 different scholarship funds, bringing total scholarship assistance for the year to $256,000.

Recipients included 64 students who are receiving a foundation scholarship for the first time, and 78 students whose academic performance made them eligible for renewal scholarships.

“Any opportunity we can give our young people to afford college is absolutely key,” said Linda Henderson, a member of the foundation's board of trustees. “I hope the students have a fabulous college experience, give back to community in some way and reach their personal expectations and goals.”

In its 11th year providing scholarship assistance, the Arlington Community Foundation has awarded more than $1.2 million to help more than 370 Arlington students attend college.

Students applied for scholarships in March, and their applications were reviewed by community members, who looked at their merit, extra-curricular activities, community involvement and other criteria.

Students who qualified were matched to the appropriate scholarship.

“I'm very grateful, because it's helped a lot for school,” said recipient Janice Li, who attends the University of Virginia. “It's one less thing to worry about.”

“It's comforting to know that I have extra money,” said Erik Lenderman, who will attend Catholic University in the fall. “Buying books is right where the money is going.”
