If She Doesn't Do It Right, Will They Whack Her?

January 30, 2008

Our own Kristen Armstrong has agreed to be a judge in the annual newspaper-writing contest of the New Jersey Press Association. A big bundle of entries, taped up very securely, arrived at her desk a couple of days ago.

It's a “you scratch our backs and we'll scratch yours” kind of arrangement, as state press associations agree to judge one another's contests. Probably no other industry gives out more awards than the news biz, and it's fun to see the work of journalists from around the U.S. of A.

I haven't seen the articles, but I'm curious about them. If any of the bylines ends with “Soprano,” that one better be going right to the top of the awards pile. I have no desire to fade to black as a Journey song plays on the juke box.

(P.S., my sainted mother is from Jersey, although she was born across the river in Easton, Pa. And our publisher is from Jersey, too.)
