What's the name that comes to mind when you realize you have to replace gutters or have to hang a door? In Middleburg it's probably Bubba Thomas of Bubba's Handyman Service.

James “Bubba” Thomas has owned his handyman business for the past five years, but he's been a part of the Middleburg community since he was born.

“I've been here all my life,” he said. “I love it because I know everybody.”

As one of nine children in his family, building and fixing things outdoors was a regular part growing up. And with 10 years experience in stucco-work and construction after high school, being a handyman came easily to Bubba.

“It's fun. I like it. It something different each day,” he said. “I don't know how people go to the same job every day!”

From landscaping to hanging art for Trowbridge-Lewis Galleries on Washington Street, Bubba said he “does a little bit of everything.”

“And if I don't do it, I'll connect you with some who will,” he said.

Though the work itself is satisfying for Bubba, he explains that his favorite part of his job is working with his 19-year-old nephew, Anthony Roberts.

“I like hanging out with my nephew and giving him knowledge of what I do,” he said. “I let him know you have to work for a living.”

Bubba plans on growing his business for the next 10 to 15 years, and hopes that he'll have enough success that he can take time to relax and enjoy his favorite activities, bowling and fishing.

But until then, he plans on working hard and helping as many people as he can.

“I love doing things for people,” he said.
